We are Chalm bilingual...
We are a group of students who go to Northeastern Illinois University. This webpage is a group project that we were assigned to do in our EDFN 305, Philosophies and Historical Foundations in Public Education. We all read a book called, When I was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago. The book talks about what it is like to come into the United States as an immigrant living in New York, as well as the author's childhood. One of the important outcomes of "When I was Puerto Rican", is that no matter how confusing and frusterating learning a new language can be, Esmeralda never gave up and exceeded the expectations of her peers, teachers and principle of her school in New York. This book emphasises the importance of bilingual education and the way it can be taught in the urban schools of today. With more and more diversity surrounding our school system, it is crucial that bilingual education be taught in a manner that will be sensitive to everyone's needs.
We decided to do a topic on bilingual education for our project. 3 out of the 5 members in our group did not have English as their primary language growing up; so most of us are able to relate to this book and the topic in general.
Thank you, and we hope you enjoyed our website!!
